After the run
Run analysis that grades how well you ran, not how fast
Run analysis in Gears grades every coached run from S+ to D for how well you ran the run you set out to run. Speed has nothing to do with it. Around the grade: a short run story, up to three lessons, six running skills, and run details with charts and a map.

What does a run grade measure?
Execution, not speed: did you run the run you set out to run? A slow run held exactly as asked can outgrade a fast one that wasn't. The app puts it plainly: “A grade is how well you ran the run you set out to run. Speed has nothing to do with it.”
| Grade | Name |
|---|---|
| S+ | Flawless |
| S | Superb |
| A | Really good |
| B | Solid |
| C | Getting there |
| D | A rough one |
Each grade carries a score out of 100, a Why line on what shaped it, and a Try line for next time. Four parts make it up: Execution, Pacing, Form and Control. Pacing reads how you shared out the effort, including your second half against your first.
Can the grade punish a good decision?
No. It's built so the right call never costs you. Doing more than you were asked never lowers a score. Stopping when it was right to stop is marked Right call, not graded down. A run too short to judge says Too short to grade.
- The run ends
And we're done. Saved to your Health.
- Asking how it felt
One question. How did that feel? Be honest, it tunes your gears.
What's in the run summary?
On iPhone: Run done, your time and distance, Time in range (how much of the run you held each gear's range), the grade, a short run story and How did that feel?. On Apple Watch: time, distance and time in range, how it felt, and how each gear felt: Easy, Right or Hard. Each answer tunes your gears. The run is saved to Apple Health before the summary appears.
The run story is a few lines of plain fact, never written by AI:
- “5.1 km in 30:05.”
- “Every walk break walked. That's the plan working.”
- “Your first 5K.”
- “You stopped for your body. Right call.”
- “Next: easy 25, Thursday.”
What are lessons and running skills?
Lessons are up to three things to take into the next run, or praise under What went best when that's the truer story. Like this: “Easy stayed easy. That discipline is what lets the hard days count.” Or, after a fast start: “Start a touch gentler than feels right, so you can finish as well as you began.”
Skills are six running skills, five levels each, worked out from your recent graded runs. The lowest is your focus, shown as Next up, and Find a run puts guided running workouts for it first.
- Easy discipline
- Smooth shifts
- Even pace
- Quick feet
- Light landing (needs an Apple Watch)
- Strong finish
How do I know I'm getting fitter?
Watch pace at the same heart rate. The line climbs as the same heart rate buys a quicker pace, and it's measured from your own runs, not a population model. “Getting fitter shows here first: the same heart rate buys a quicker pace. Measured from your own runs.” When your gears move, the coach tells you on the next run.
- The run after your gears move
Your gears have moved. Same effort, faster paces. That's fitness.
What's in the run details?
Open any run for the full picture.
- A pinned map with a dot that moves as you scrub through the run.
- Charts for heart rate, pace, power, cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, ground contact time and elevation, with the gear you were asked for drawn on each.
- Ranges of 1 min, 5 min, 15 min or All, and pinch to zoom any chart down to a minute.
- Splits per kilometer or mile, and blocks per gear: the target, the pace you ran and your time in range.
- What this run cost you: how the night after looked, from Apple Health. See running readiness.
The Runs tab leads with your latest run, then past runs by month, with search by name, rename, and delete with Undo. Runs from other apps sit under From your other apps and count toward your plan and training load.
What Gears doesn't do
- No grading on speed. A slow run done right can outgrade a fast run done wrong.
- No grades or maps for runs from other apps. Routes and grades come from runs Gears coaches.
- No form charts for a run on iPhone alone. Those need an Apple Watch that records form data.
- No AI in your run story. Every line is a fact from your run.
- Not yet: uploads to Strava, a heart-rate trace over your gear bands in history, or records and trends.
Questions runners ask
What does a Gears run grade mean?
It's a letter from S+ to D, with a score out of 100, for how well you ran the run you set out to run. Speed has nothing to do with it.
Will stopping early ruin my grade?
No, not when stopping was right. A run you stopped for your body is marked Right call, not graded down, and doing more than asked never lowers a score.
Does Gears score my running form?
Yes, as one part of the grade. Form sits alongside Execution, Pacing and Control. Form charts in run details need an Apple Watch that records form data.
Where do I see my grade?
On the iPhone summary after a coached run, and on the run's page in Runs.
Can I see heart rate and cadence charts?
Yes. Run details chart heart rate, pace, power, cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, ground contact time and elevation, with a map. Form charts need an Apple Watch.
Do runs from other apps get a grade?
No. They appear under From your other apps and count toward your plan and load, but grades and routes come from runs Gears coaches.
