Gears

Start running

New to running? Start with a walk.

Gears is a beginner running app that starts with walking breaks and builds you to 30 minutes non-stop. It coaches by effort, not a fixed schedule: your efforts are set from you, and a calm coach stays in your ear the whole way.

How is Gears different from Couch to 5K?

A fixed program moves every runner along the same schedule. Gears starts from you: how long you could run without stopping today, which days you have (two to six) and how long a run can be. The Start running goal goes “From walking breaks to 30 minutes non-stop.” If 5K is the aim, First 5K takes you there: “Your first 5K, start to finish.” Every run fits the time you gave, and the plan moves when you do.

Why is it so hard to start running?

Usually because new runners start too fast and nobody tells them what easy feels like.

  • Starting too fast. Most new runners set off at a pace they can't hold, run out of breath and decide running isn't for them.
  • Not knowing what “easy” means. Without a guide, every run becomes a hard one.
  • One missed day becomes a missed month. Fixed schedules make catching up the price of coming back.
  • Nobody tells you it's working. Early progress is quiet, and easy to miss.

Tell the app the first of those, “I start too fast and run out of breath”, and it answers: “That is the one I fix first. I catch it as it happens.”

How does Gears help beginners start running?

Walking counts, the plan bends and the coach stays calm.

1. Walking is a gear

Walk is one of the four efforts, so walk breaks are part of the run, not a failure. For a new runner, Easy can be a brisk walk and Hard a quick jog. Can't run without stopping yet? The app's answer: “Not yet starts with walking.” More on your personal gears.

2. A run-walk plan that fits, and bends

With Gears Plus, your plan is built from your goal and your week, and every run says why it's there. Seven minutes is a real workout. Miss a run and there's nothing to make up: “Tuesday's run didn't happen. Nothing to make up: your plan carries on.” Ill, sore or can't today? One tap. More on the personalized running plan.

3. A calm coach in your ear

Set the coach's toughness to Calm: “The facts, kindly, with plenty of encouragement.” While you build up, the coach goes no harder than Firm, whatever you choose. It never scolds you for slowing on a hill, and safety lines are always on. More on the voice coach.

What is the first run like?

Your first run is Meet your gears, a short session that teaches all three gears. “Fun, not a test.” Up to ten minutes, never longer than the time you have, on the watch or the iPhone. Your first coached run is free. After it, recording runs stays free (time, distance, pace, heart rate and route), and coached runs and your plan are part of Gears Plus.

What does a run-walk session sound like?

  1. The run startsLet's run. Start relaxed, shoulders loose.
  2. Running too quicklyToo quick. Gear one is slower than you think.
  3. Into a walk breakWalk break. Hands on hips is fine.
  4. Jogging through the walkYou're running the walk. The recovery is the point. Slow down.
  5. Back to runningBack to running. Gear one, gentle.
  6. In rangeLovely. Keep it just like this.
  7. The finishThat's it. You showed up and you did it.

What do I need to start running with Gears?

An iPhone on iOS 26, which runs the whole coached run alone, by pace. An Apple Watch adds heart rate and lets you leave the phone at home. Headphones make the coach easy to hear, with your own music underneath. Gears never asks your weight, height, age or name.

Before the first run, it asks how long you could run without stopping today and what gets in your way, and answers each with what it will do. “I can't find the time” gets “Then tell me what you have. Every run will fit it.”

What Gears doesn't do

  • It doesn't promise a 5K by a date. Your plan shows the date it expects you to reach your goal, and adapts as you go.
  • It doesn't push through pain. Tap “Something hurts” and the run stops: “Stopping. Rest it. I'd rather lose a run than lose a month.”
  • It doesn't make up for missed runs by piling them on later.
  • It isn't medical advice. If you have a health condition, talk to a doctor before you start. Read the health disclaimer.

Questions runners ask

Can I use Gears if I can't run for a minute yet?

Yes. The Start running goal begins with walking breaks, and for a new runner Easy can be a brisk walk. Walk is a gear, so walking is part of the plan.

How long until I can run 30 minutes without stopping?

It depends on you. Your plan shows the date it expects you to get there, and it adjusts as you run, miss days or need an easy week.

Is Gears free?

Your first coached run is free. After that, recording runs stays free, and coached runs and the plan are part of Gears Plus: in the US, $9.99 a month, or $89.99 a year with one month free. Cancel in Settings at least a day before the trial ends and you pay nothing.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. The iPhone runs a whole coached run on its own. A watch adds heart rate and lets you run without the phone.
