Terms of use
These terms are the agreement between you and Likeflare LLC, the maker of Gears, for using the Gears app on iPhone and Apple Watch, your Gears account, Gears Plus and this website. We've written them to be read, not skimmed past.
The short version
- You need to be 16 or older. You sign in with Apple.
- Your first coached run is free, and recording runs stays free. Gears Plus is a subscription that Apple bills and renews until you cancel.
- Gears is a training companion, not a medical device or medical advice. Listen to your body, and stop if something hurts.
- You're responsible for running safely: traffic, routes and the world around you.
- Your words stay yours. Our app, coach recordings and content stay ours.
- Use Gears fairly, and we'll do our best to keep it running well for you.
About these terms
By using Gears you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy, which explains how we handle your data. If you don't agree, please don't use Gears. "We" and "us" mean Likeflare LLC; "you" means the person using Gears.
When you download Gears from the App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. If these terms and Apple's agreement disagree about how the app is licensed to you, Apple's agreement wins. Apple isn't responsible for Gears or its support; we are.
Who can use Gears
You must be at least 16 years old, and able to agree to these terms where you live. Gears is for your own, personal use. If you use Gears for someone else, such as a team you coach, each runner needs their own account.
Your account
- You can try Gears and complete your first run without an account. To keep using it, you sign in with Apple. We never ask for a password, your name or your email address.
- Your account is protected by your Apple Account, so keep that secure. One account is for one person.
- Tell us straight away at privacy@gearsrunning.com if you think someone else has used your account.
- You can sign out, or delete your account and everything in it, at any time in You → Settings → Account.
Gears Plus and billing
Some of Gears is free for good: the first launch, your first coached run, and then recording runs (time, distance, pace, heart rate and route, with safety alerts), browsing runs, your gears and your history. Coached runs, your personalized training plan, Today's gear, In your own words and the rhythm sounds are part of Gears Plus, a subscription sold through the App Store.
- Plans: monthly, or yearly. Prices are shown in the App Store before you buy, in your currency. In the US, Gears Plus is $9.99 a month or $89.99 a year.
- Free trial: the yearly plan includes one month free for eligible new subscribers. The monthly plan has no free trial. If you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, you pay nothing.
- Billing: Apple charges your Apple Account when the free trial ends, or when you subscribe if there is no trial, and then at every renewal.
- Automatic renewal: your subscription renews automatically for the same period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
- Canceling: on your iPhone, open Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Gears, or in Gears open You → Settings → Gears Plus → Manage subscription. You keep Gears Plus until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Refunds: Apple handles all payments and refunds. To ask for one, go to reportaproblem.apple.com. Your rights under local consumer law are not affected.
- Restoring: on a new iPhone, open You → Settings → Gears Plus → Restore purchases while signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Price changes: if the price of your subscription changes, Apple tells you beforehand and, where the law or Apple's rules require it, asks for your agreement.
- When Gears Plus ends: you can still record runs. Your gears, runs and history stay yours, and your plan is kept but stops adapting until you subscribe again.
Deleting the app or your account doesn't cancel a subscription. Cancel it with Apple as described above.
Health and safety
- Readiness, Today's gear, training load, grades and your plan are guidance for today's run, worked out from your data. They can be wrong, and they never replace how you feel or what a doctor tells you.
- Heart-rate, GPS and other sensor readings can be inaccurate.
- You choose whether to run, how hard, and where. You're responsible for your own safety: traffic, crossings, terrain, weather, light, and keeping your headphones at a volume that lets you hear what's around you.
- Read our full Health and safety page before you start.
The coach and our content
The coach speaks pre-recorded lines, chosen by rules on your device as you run, and your plan is built from rules too. They're designed for most healthy adults and can't know everything about you. We may add, change or remove runs, lines, voices and features as Gears improves.
Your content: In your own words
- What you type into Describe a run or Adjust your plan, and your ratings, are yours. You give us permission to store and process them only to provide Gears to you, including sending your words to an AI model if you allowed it.
- Answers from the AI model can be wrong. Nothing changes in your plan until you tap Accept, so check a suggestion before you accept it.
- Please don't type anyone else's personal information, or health details you wouldn't want an AI provider to see. The provider may keep your words and use them to improve its models, as our privacy policy explains.
- Your ratings are added to everyone's, and other runners see the totals, without your name.
Using Gears fairly
Please don't:
- break the law, or use Gears to harm anyone
- copy, resell, rent or redistribute the app, its coach recordings or its content
- reverse-engineer, decompile or try to get around how Gears or Gears Plus works, except where the law lets you
- interfere with our servers, overload them, or try to reach anyone else's data
- use bots or scripts to send requests, including to the AI feature or this website's forms
- type abusive or unlawful content into In your own words
Our intellectual property
The Gears app, its design, the gears, the coach's recorded lines and voices, the runs, the plans, the illustrations and this website belong to Likeflare LLC or the people who licensed them to us. We give you a personal, non-transferable license to use Gears on Apple devices you own or control, under these terms and Apple's. Weather data is from MET Norway under CC BY 4.0, and height data is from Mapzen Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data.
Other companies' services
Gears works with services we don't run: Apple Health, Sign in with Apple and the App Store; workouts other apps save to Apple Health, such as Garmin Connect's; your music app; Bluetooth heart-rate straps and Garmin watches; the weather and map services named in our privacy policy; and the AI model provider if you allowed it. Their terms apply to them, and we're not responsible for what they do or for data that comes from them, such as a workout another app recorded wrongly.
What we promise, and what we can't
We work hard to make Gears accurate, reliable and safe. But running is physical, sensors are imperfect, and software has bugs. So, as far as the law allows, Gears is provided "as is" and "as available", without guarantees that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or suited to any particular goal, and without promises about the results you'll get from training. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under consumer law that can't be excluded.
Limits on our liability
As far as the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or unforeseeable losses, such as lost profits or lost data, or for injury or harm from how, where or how hard you chose to run. Where we are liable, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for Gears Plus in the 12 months before the claim, or 50 US dollars, whichever is more.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't be limited by law. If you're a consumer in the EU or UK, we're responsible for loss you suffer that was a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care.
If a claim arises from misuse
If you break these terms or the law while using Gears, and someone makes a claim against us because of it, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of that claim. This doesn't apply where consumer law where you live doesn't allow it.
Ending things
You can stop using Gears whenever you like, and delete your account in the app. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or if the law requires it; unless the law or safety stops us, we'll tell you first and explain why. If we ever stop offering Gears, we'll give you reasonable notice and a way to get a copy of your data. Sections that by their nature should last, such as liability and intellectual property, continue after these terms end.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the country where Likeflare LLC is established. If you're a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in your local courts. Before going to court, please write to us first: most things can be put right quickly.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as Gears changes. The date at the bottom shows the last change. If a change matters to you, we'll tell you in the app or on this site before it takes effect. If you keep using Gears afterward, the new terms apply; if you don't agree, you can stop using Gears and delete your account.
